Conclusions: Cardiac dysfunction induced by myocardial infarction renders mice susceptible to bacterial infection and increases mortality because of a reduced ability of Kupffer cells to clear infectious bacteria. C-reactive protein-enhanced phagocytic activity of Kupffer cells may improve the poor prognosis after bacterial infection
in mice with myocardial infarction. (J Thorac Cardiovasc Surg 2010; 140: 624-32)”
“Prolonged nutrient limitation has been extensively studied due to its positive effects on life span. However, less is understood of how brief periods of starvation THZ1 can have lasting consequences. In this study, we used genetics, biochemistry, pharmacology and behavioral analysis to show that after a limited period of starvation, the synthesis of egl-2-encoded ether-a-go-go (EAG) K+ channels and its C-terminal modifications by unc-43-encoded CaMKII have a perduring effect on C. elegans male sexual behavior. EGL-2 and UNC-43 interactions, induced after food deprivation, maintain reduced excitability in muscles involved in sex. In young adult males, spastic contractions occur in cholinergic-activated sex muscles that lack functional
unc-103-encoded ERG-like K+ channels. Promoting EGL-2 and UNC-43 interactions in unc-103 mutant adult males by starving them for a few hours reduce spastic muscle contractions over multiple days. Although transient starvation during early adulthood has a hormetic effect Bucladesine in vitro of suppressing mutation-induced muscle contractions, the treatment reduces the ability of young wild-type (WT) males to compete with well-fed cohorts in siring progeny. “Objective: Thiamet G Pulmonary vein isolation is indicated in patients with symptomatic isolated atrial fibrillation not controlled with antiarrhythmic therapy. We describe
our surgical experience with thoracoscopic pulmonary vein isolation in patients in whom percutaneous ablation has failed.
Methods: Thirty-four adult patients with unsuccessful catheter ablations (range 1-4, mean 2 +/- 1) underwent thoracoscopic bipolar-radiofrequency pulmonary vein isolation. Seventeen patients had paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, 12 with persistent and 5 with long-standing persistent fibrillation, for a mean of 6 years (range 3-10 years), 13 years (5-25 years), and 9 years (3-15 years), respectively.
Results: There was no mortality during the procedure or follow-up (mean 16 +/- 11 months). Two patients needed conversion to thoracotomy owing to hemorrhage, and ablation could not be completed. Antiarrhythmic therapy was withdrawn 3 months postoperatively.
