“The aim of this study was to explore the effects of varicocele on the morphology and function of Leydig cells in the rat testis. Forty male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into two groups: the experimental group underwent surgery to create a left varicocele (VC), and the control group underwent a sham operation. Serum testosterone and intratesticular testosterone levels were measured using a radioimmunoassay after 4 and 8 weeks of operation. Leydig cells were studied for apoptosis and expression of steroidogenetic acute regulatory (StAR) protein mRNA levels. Serum testosterone levels declined after 4 and 8 weeks of operation but were not significant (P < 0.05). However, the intratesticular testosterone levels after 8 weeks were significantly decreased compared with the control group (P < 0.01). The mean apoptosis index of Leydig GW786034 chemical structure cells in the experimental group was significantly higher than that in the control group after 4 or 8 weeks (P < 0.01). Our data show that varicocele did impair Leydig cell function by increasing apoptosis and suppressing the expression of the StAR protein.

“Silicon (Si) and aluminum (Al) co-doped amorphous carbon films ((Si, Al)-C:H) were deposited on Si and stainless steel substrates by radio frequency (13.56 MHz) magnetron sputtering. The Al and Si were found to jointly regulate the hybridized carbon bonds. Mechanical properties of the films were detected by nano-indention and scratch tests. The nano-indention results revealed that all the

samples exhibited good elastic recovery rate, among which the highest one was beyond 84%. Besides co-regulating the hybridizations of carbon, the co-doped Si and Al also had a common regulation on the mechanical and tribological properties. Especially, the film containing Selleck Vorinostat 1.6 at. % of Si and 0.9 at. % of Al showed a super-low friction (< 0.01) and a superior wear resistance in ambient air. “This study is focused on the investigation of the effect of thermal shock cycling on the mechanical properties of cellulose based reinforced polymer composites. Polymer composites reinforced with olive pits powder at different filler-volume fractions were manufactured. An increase in the bending modulus on the order of 48% was achieved. On the other hand, results showed that the bending strength remained almost unaffected from the amount of filler introduced. Next, the effect of thermal shock cycling on the mechanical behaviour of the thus manufactured composites was investigated.
