Therefore, diseased implants may have an implant-specific bacterial microbiota that is not totally similar to that of the diseased teeth and the clinical implications of these findings should be further evaluated. Finally, other species of bacteria not searched in the present study may be involved in peri-implant disease pathogenesis which might have lead to these somewhat not expected results.
